Sunburn: Causes and home remedies
Over exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation usually causes sunburn. Sunburn causes redness, pain and some swelling. The sun burnt skin can turn dry, pale and itchy. Though the problem does not seem to be too severe, it can lead to death and even permanent disability.
Causes of Sunburn:
- Being outdoors
- Outdoor activities, like swimming, skiing and hiking
- Consumption of birth control pills
- Antibacterial agents present in soaps and creams
- Inability of body to make enough melanin
Consequences of sunburn:
The long-term consequences of years of over exposure to the sun are significant. It has now been recognized that sunburn and sun exposure should not be taken as something insignificant. Deaths have resulted from acute sun poisoning and significant temporary disability is experienced by millions of sunburned people every year.
Remedies/ treatment/ measures to relieve mild sunburn:
Take a warm water bath without using soap and do not rub your skin with hands or any other thing.
For mild sun burn, try to take a cold water bath or a shower. You can also place iced pack or cold water on the affected areas for 15 to 20 minutes.
Once you come out of the shower, pat dry yourself rather than rubbing your sun burnt skin harshly with a towel.
Aloe Vera has anti-inflammatory effects and can be used to soothe burnt skin. Aloe Vera gel should be applied on the affected sun burnt areas to treat sun burns.
A popular sun burn remedy is plain white vinegar. Soaking clean towel in half glass of water with half glass vinegar solution can be used effectively to treat sun burns.
Drink plenty of water and fluids when you are out in sun.
Applying mayonnaise as a skin cream prevents sun burn.
Apply thin slices of cold apples, potatoes and cucumbers to the skin to avoid sun burns.
Application of cold, plain yoghurt on the skin is effective in sun burn.
Take used tea bags and apply them cold on the sun-burned eyelids to provide a relaxing effect.
Apply olive oil mixed with vinegar before your bath.
Soak white vinegar in a tub of cold water and used the same for your bath.
